CASABLANCA SUSTAINABLE MARKET SQUARE

CASABLANCA SUSTAINABLE MARKET SQUARE
The sustainable market square is a place where people can come to buy fresh produce, meats, and fish, while also providing a social environment where interaction with the public can happen at different levels. The varying functions of the market allow for people to come to the site even when they do not have the idea of buying fresh foods, but just want to socialize and enjoy the atmosphere that is provided. The proposed design is based around the idea of multiple pods arranged in different ways on the site. The basic form of the pod is similar to that of an egg which provides for a high degree of circulation space through and around. The market stalls are designed to be pre-fabricated and brought to site for quick assembly. The cafeteria is designed with serving space on the ground level, and a second level provides seating and social space that overlook the market and provides a separation between the busy market and the relaxed nature of a café. To provide a sun and weather barrier, the canopy is an organic form based off a tensile structure, which turned into a wood structure that supports a canvas canopy on top. The sustainable market square allows for many possibilities of things to happen within it, providing an enjoyable place to come and purchase local foods, or just relax.
